Boo! Halloween is just around the corner, so we’re getting in the Halloween mood, starting in the kitchen, making spooky snacks and frightfully yum(mum)my easy Halloween recipe!

After Franziska’s traditional pumpkin and chestnut soup, some ghostly creatures have crept up in the kitchen… and turned these small apple hand pies into unboolievably cute ghosts. Beware! You might want them to haunt all your snack boxes!

Easy Halloween recipe to make with the kids

While surfing the internet in search for ideas, we came across some crazy recipes, namely spider-shaped pizzas with bat-oreo biscuits (Yes, you read it right!! Pizza with oreo biscuits… Enough to spook even the more adventurous of us all). But it’s the Spooktacular Ghost Hand Pies which grabbed our childrens’ attention!

Scared of nothing and willing to take some risks, we decided to experiment this recipe with the kids. Baking with kids is always an adventure in its own right but the outcome was surprisingly positive: the children loved getting involved and, especially, eating their own spooky creations afterwards! The plus is that you only need five ingredients!

Halloween Ghost Hand Pie recipe

To make these sweet Halloween ghosts, here is what you need:

  • 1 puff pastry sheet (For the bravest, you can make your own of course, it’s loads better, but this time we opted for the quick and easy solution 😉)
  • 4 diced apples
  • ¼ cup of cane sugar
  • 50 gr butter
  • Cinnamon
  • 1 egg yolk

Making this easy Halloween recipe

The first step to make the Ghost Hand Pies, start by dicing the apples: Cut each apple in 4 slices, staying well away from the core; then cut the 4 slabs in half lengthwise. Place each apple slab flat side down on a cutting board. Line up the pile of apple sticks and hold them together. Start at the end of the sticks and begin cutting across them.

Once diced, cook the apples in a casserole adding the butter and the cinnamon until the apples are soft and the mixture has thickened.

Meanwhile, you can start preparing the pastry ghosts. It’s easy! You can either print or draw the ghost shape on a white sheet, which will be your template for cutting out the ghosts out of the pastry sheet.
Bear in mind you need 2 pastry ghosts to make 1 pie.

Once you have all your pastry ghosts, make a hole for both the mouth and the 2 eyes on every other ghost since one will be used for the top of the hand pies, and the second (with no mouth and eyes) is the back.

Still with us and following?

When the apples and butter mix has thickened and cooled down a bit, place your pastry ghosts (those with no mouth and eyes) on a tray covered with baking foil.
Next, spread a spoon of apple mix on it.
Finally, cover it with another pastry ghost pressing the tines of a fork into the edge of the pie to completely stick the 2 ghosts together.

For the final touch, brush some egg yolk on the pies.

Now, pop them in the oven and bake them at 200° for about 15 minutes until golden brown.

……And VOILA’  Your creepy cutie ghosts are ready to be savoured! 😋
