Know your washing symbols

The washing symbols for machine washable clothing are generally depicted as a bucket filled with water. The number or dots inside the bucket symbol indicate the maximum temperature recommended for the wash. For example, one dot means 30 °C (meaning that you have to wash your clothing in cold water). Two dots or 40 °C mean a warm water wash while four dots mean 60 °C.
One line drawn underneath the bucket means that you should wash your piece of clothing on a synthetic cycle. Two lines represent the gentle or wool wash cycle. If you find the hand wash symbol on your garment’s fabric care label, wash the item by hand at 40 °C or lower, or use your washing machine’s hand wash program.

Drying symbols

Drying symbols can also be mind boggling. Here is a quick list of the ones you will find on the care labels of your clothes.

Other laundry care symbols

There are other symbols that you might see on care labels. Some refer to the treatments you can or cannot use on your clothes (bleach or not).

Others will indicate if you can iron your clothes or not, and if the former at what temperature.
