Steps to make an autumn DIY:

Step 1: Print the autumn DIY printable

Download and print the free template we’ve created especially for this activity. It includes models of small forest animals, we all love: a squirrel, a hedgehog and a fox.

Step 2: Cutting

Set the children to carefully cut out the elements of the template. Each element corresponds to a part of the animal’s body.
Once all the bits are cut out, then they will need to flatten the cardboard (toilet) roll. You will end up with a rectangle measuring about 6 x 10 cm.

Next, place the cut out element on the cardboard and trace the outline with a pencil. Once you have traced each element, simply cut the cardboard roll to shape.

Step 3: Add natural embellishments

Autumn is very generous in all the treasures  this season offers: beautiful coloured leaves, acorns are only but a few!
Take advantage of a walk in the woods to collect leaves, twigs, pine cones or even acorns hats. Beautiful treasures that you will use thereafter to decorate and personalise the animals, to make the hedgehog’s quills and the fox and squirrel’s tails.
Follow your imagination and imply stick leaves and other decorations with glue.
You can also use coloured markers (or Posca style paint markers) to add some colours to your lovely forest creatures.

Step 4: Assembling

All that’s left to do, now, is assemble the different parts of the animals when necessary by gluing the different elements (squirrel and fox tails) to the bodies.
Your children can even name the animals!

A fantastic Autumn DIY

  • Simple and inexpensive: All you need is a few rolls of toilet paper and some autumn leaves!
  • Environmentally friendly: It uses recycled materials and elements found in nature.
  • Educational: This activity allows children to discover forest animals while developing their fine motor skills.

Doing art and crafts with your children is a great way to spend time together while stimulating their creativity. So grab your toilet rolls, scissors and autumn leaves and let the magic of the forest work its magic!
What’s more, this autumn activity is a good reason (if parents ever need one to convince the kids) to go out and have a fun time discovering nature’s treasures. Get the coats, the hats, the scarfs and the welly boots out (all of them already labelled for daycare with Mine4Sure’s personalised nursery labels), and head out for a good dose of fresh air!
